This is a bi-weekly, four-class course focusing on photography in low light, using both man-made and natural illumination. The class explores procedures, methods and equipment needed to overcome the unique challenges of low-light photography. Image possibilities of photography after sunset will be explored, with a focus on creative use of intermediate photo skills. There will be a minimum of two night-time fieldtrips* during this course (one urban, one rural), scheduled according to the weather and the moon.

Topics covered:

  • basic tools for night photography
  • controlling exposures in low light
  • showing (or stopping) motion
  • white balance and colour casts
  • painting with light
  • hand-held flash at night

Class Size: four to eight students - 2 spaces left

Fee: $200 CAD plus $20 per each optional fieldtrip attended*

Course Expectations: Students are to bring ten images to the first class, to introduce themselves visually to other students. For each bi-weekly class, students are expected to bring three prints to class for group critique and discussion.

Requirements : Students must be comfortable using their camera in manual mode (Photo 101 recommended), and while post-production is not required, comfort in working with RAW files, and basic image editing will enhance the enjoyment and possibilities of the course (Digital 101 recommended). Students must have a manual capable camera and a tripod. Additional lenses, external flash units (as opposed to build-in flashes) and remote/cable releases can enhance the enjoyment and possibilities of the course.

* Field-trips will scheduled at least 48 hours in advance, and will begin at approximately 8:00pm, and run until the wee hours of the night (or until the last student leaves).
